WASHINGTON, August 31, 2010 – With the global population expected to reach nine billion by 2050, economic development spurring demand for more and better food, and increased hydrological variability caused by climate change, a review of the World Bank Group’s water strategy calls for better information and a more integrated approach to water management.

After 18 years, the low key and venerable Tony Tan Caktiong, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Food Giant Jollibee Food Corporation finally obliged to be the keynote speaker in the recent Philippine Retailers Association’s 19th National Retailers Conference and Expo at SMEX Convention Center, Pasay City.

Tan Caktiong gave a very personal and yet truly heart-warming message to the delegates of the confab based on his experience as a college student and as a young entrepreneur. As a college student, the habit of doing his best was already a part of his work ethics which he inherited from his mother. Because he knows that it is not easy to work hard and at the same time to be happy considering the time and energy one consumes when working.

Court of Appeals: 'Ginebra' not exclusive to San Miguel Corporation

The Court of Appeals has denied Ginebra San Miguel Inc. then called La Tondeńa Distillers Inc., to get a patent for the word “ginebra,” thus, upholding the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines’ (IPO) decision that the word is a generic name for gin.

In a six-page decision penned by Associate Justice Estela Perlas-Bernabe, and concurred by Associate Justices Bienvenido Reyes and Elihu Ybańez of the Court of Appeals (CA) Third Division, the CA denied the petition of Ginebra San Miguel, Inc. to register the brand name “Ginebra,” ruling in favor of the IPO that the word corresponds to “gin” in Spanish language. Therefore, San Miguel Corp. (SMC) does not have exclusive right to use the label “Ginebra” for its gin products.

However, Ramon Ang led-Ginebra San Miguel, said that the company’s use of “ginebra” in its products created a “secondary meaning” for the term. And that the term “Ginebra” has also become distinctive by its extensive, consistent and continuous use as the dominant feature of its gin products, thus, it has preferential and superior right to use the same as trademark to the exclusion of other beverage companies.
